Stream Biological Assessment
Biological assessment involves gathering macroinvertebrates from the stream by the method of kick-seining as seen in the picture above.
We will attempt to identify the organisms we collect. Some aquatic organisms are more sensitive to pollutants than others. Mayflies, some species of Caddisfly and Stoneflies are especially intolerant to pollution.
Macroinvertebrates are excellent indicators of water quality. There are many times when chemical sampling looks good but there are few pollution sensitive macroinvertebrates present. This indicates that the pollution problems in the stream are intermittent.
