Total Residual Chlorine

Total Residual Chlorine

Chlorine is a gas in its natural state. It is toxic to microbes and animals and is widely used to disinfect drinking water and wastewater. It can also combine with a wide variety of organic and inorganic chemicals to produce toxic compounds. Total Residual Chlorine consists of Free Chlorine (hypochlorite ion, hypochlorous acid - the disinfecting agent) and chloramines (formed when chlorine reacts with ammonia or nitrogen).
